Split It Any Way They Ask: Checks, Tabs, and Split Payments

A practical guide to splitting checks and taking split payments on NoPOS: seat-level splits, uneven shares, and one clean settlement that keeps the books right.

The NoPOS developer relations team writes practical guides for building on the NoPOS REST API — from first smoke test to production POS.

Nobody should have to do mental math at the table. NoPOS splits checks the way guests actually ask — by seat, evenly, by item, or "just put $40 on this card" — and settles every piece against the same sale so the drawer, the report, and the receipt all agree.

Split the check the way they ask

  • Split by seat when the order was fired by seat, so each guest's items land on the right check automatically.
  • Split evenly or by custom shares for the group that just wants it fair without itemizing.
  • Move individual items between checks with a tap when one person picks up the appetizers after all.

Take split payments without the awkward pause

  • Accept a different tender per check — card here, cash there, gift card for the birthday guest — in any order.
  • Cover uneven amounts ("put $40 on this card, rest on that one") with partial payments that track the remaining balance live.
  • Keep the tab open across rounds and settle once at the end, with every authorization linked to the same sale.

Keep one clean settlement

  1. Every split stays attached to the parent sale, so end-of-day close reconciles one check, not five mysteries.
  2. Tips apply per payment, not per check, so pooled and kept gratuities calculate correctly on every share.
  3. Each guest gets a receipt showing only their share, with the table total for reference.

Use Swagger UI or OpenAPI for the current check-split, partial-payment, and settlement request shapes.
