Count the Drawer, Trust the Shift: Cash Control Without the Clipboard
A practical guide to cash drawers and shift handovers on NoPOS: starting floats, blind drops, till counts, and over/short tracking per cashier.
The NoPOS developer relations team writes practical guides for building on the NoPOS REST API — from first smoke test to production POS.
Cash is the one payment method that never sends a webhook. NoPOS keeps every drawer honest: each shift starts from a counted float, every drop and payout is logged to a cashier, and handovers reconcile expected against actual before the next shift touches the till.
Start every shift from a counted float
- Open the drawer with a declared starting float per register — no carrying yesterday's mystery balance forward.
- Assign the drawer to one cashier at a time so every bill has an owner from open to close.
- Log paid-outs and paid-ins (cleaning supplies, a customer refund in cash) against the drawer the moment they happen, not from memory later.
Drops and handovers without the drama
- Run blind drops mid-shift when the drawer gets heavy: the cashier enters what they think is in there, the manager counts, and the variance tells the story.
- Hand over with a till count, not a handshake — the outgoing cashier counts, the incoming cashier verifies, and both sign off in the same record.
- Flag over/short per cashier per shift so patterns surface in days, not at month-end when nobody remembers.
Close the loop every night
- Count each drawer against its expected total and post the variance to the cashier's record.
- Reconcile the safe and card batches alongside cash so the end-of-day report tells one story.
- Export drawer activity with the shift report — auditors and accountants get the same numbers you saw.
Use Swagger UI or OpenAPI for the current drawer-session, drop, payout, and variance request shapes.
