Memberships, Subscriptions, and Recurring Billing on One POS
A practical guide to running memberships and subscriptions on NoPOS: plan and pass-based entitlements at checkout, automatic renewals with proration and pause, and failed-payment recovery that keeps members in good standing without front-desk heroics.
The NoPOS developer relations team writes practical guides for building on the NoPOS REST API — from first smoke test to production POS.
Membership billing should behave like a payment plan, not a side spreadsheet. When plans, renewals, and redemptions all run through the same POS that takes the daily sale, the front desk stops reconciling three systems and members stop getting billed for perks they never received.
Sell plans and passes where you already sell everything else
- Offer recurring memberships (monthly wash club, weekly meal plan, class pack) as first-class sale items, with plan length, billing cadence, and included perks defined once and reused at every terminal.
- Scan or tap the member credential at checkout so visits, redemptions, and guest passes decrement automatically — no punch cards to lose and no manager overrides to look up.
- Handle gift memberships and corporate-sponsored seats with the same tender engine, so a gifted month activates, renews, and expires exactly like a paid one.
Let renewals, proration, and pauses run themselves
- Bill renewals automatically on the member's stored token, with proration when someone joins mid-cycle or upgrades tiers halfway through the month.
- Support pause-and-resume for seasonal members instead of cancel-and-resign churn — a frozen plan keeps the payment method on file and restarts billing on the resume date.
- Send renewal reminders and receipts from the same receipt pipeline as counter sales, so members always see the same business name, amount, and support contact.
Recover failed payments before they become cancellations
- Retry soft-declined renewals on a smart schedule with a friendly heads-up after the first miss, so an expired card gets updated before access is cut off.
- Grace-period the perks: let a member with one failed attempt still redeem this week's visit while the retry window is open, and block only after the final attempt fails.
- Reconcile every renewal, retry, refund, and credit in the end-of-day close, so recurring revenue lands in the same ledger as walk-in sales instead of a separate report nobody opens.
Use Swagger UI or OpenAPI for the current membership-plan, subscription-renewal, and stored-credential shapes.
