Drive-Thru Windows That Beat the Clock
A practical guide to drive-thru timing on NoPOS: order-ahead and lane firing that keep cars moving, window payments and handoffs that never stall the line, and per-car timing reports that show exactly where seconds leak.
The NoPOS developer relations team writes practical guides for building on the NoPOS REST API — from first smoke test to production POS.
Your drive-thru backs up past the speaker while the kitchen waits on a ticket that already paid at the window. Run the lane on the same order, ticket, and payment engine as the counter, and cars clear in minutes with every second accounted for.
Fire lane orders before cars reach the window
- Send speaker, mobile order-ahead, and lane-tablet orders through the same ticket flow so they land on the KDS with the same coursing, firing, and station routing as dine-in.
- Stage drinks, fries, and grab-and-go items per car tag so the window handoff is one bag, one check — never a re-fire while the line idles.
- Throttle order-ahead slots per location when ticket times spike, and fall back to speaker-only mode automatically if lane hardware goes offline.
Take window payments without stalling the line
- Settle window card, tap, and fleet payments through the same processor and batch as the counter so end-of-day close shows one tender record, not a separate lane drawer to merge.
- Keep a per-car open ticket from speaker to window so upsells, voids, and remakes post to the right car instead of the car behind it.
- Let regulars earn and redeem loyalty and gift-card balances at the window against the same ledger, with tender time stamped per car.
Find where the seconds leak
- Track speaker-to-window time per car, per daypart, and per location so a slow Tuesday lunch points at staffing, not the menu.
- Route window comps and remakes into the same void/comp reports as counter orders so freebies stay visible and auditable.
- Review lane mix — order-ahead vs. speaker vs. fleet — weekly to place staff and menu boards where they cut queue time most.
Use Swagger UI or OpenAPI for the current lane-order, car-tag, and timing-report shapes.
