Sales Tax, Solved at the Register

A practical guide to multi-jurisdiction sales tax on NoPOS: rate tables, exempt items, and receipts your accountant will love.

Sales tax is where simple checkouts go to die — county add-ons, city districts, exempt groceries, taxable candy. NoPOS keeps it boring: rate tables do the math, the register just rings.

One rate table per jurisdiction

  • Attach each lane to the jurisdiction it sells in so state, county, and district rates stack automatically.
  • Version every rate table with an effective date; old receipts keep the rate they rang under.
  • Pull fresh tables after every sync — never hardcode a percentage at the register.

Exempt what should be exempt

  • Flag exempt SKUs and customer classes (resale, nonprofit) in the catalog, not in cashier memory.
  • Print the exempt reason code on the receipt so audits trace themselves.
  • Require manager approval to override tax on a taxable line, and log who did it.

Receipts your accountant will love

  1. Show subtotal, each tax line, and total as separate lines — never a blended number.
  2. Reconcile collected tax per jurisdiction in the end-of-day close before payout.
  3. Export jurisdiction totals straight to your accounting integration each week.

Use Swagger UI or OpenAPI for the current tax-table, exemption, and reporting request shapes.
