Holiday Rush Prep: Get Your POS Ready for Black Friday & December

A practical checklist to prep your POS for the holiday surge: seasonal menus and promos, staffing and permissions for temp hires, hardware spares, offline fallback, and a calm close after the busiest days of the year.

The holidays compress a month of revenue into a few brutal weeks. The stores that sail through it do the unglamorous work in October: menus staged, promos tested, temp staff permissioned, and hardware spared. Run this checklist now and December is just another busy day.

Stage seasonal menus and promos early

Build holiday menus, gift-card pushes, and limited-time bundles in a draft or scheduled state now — not on Black Friday morning. Price-test every promo end to end: apply it, void it, split the check with it on. A discount that misfires at 10x volume is a line-out-the-door problem. Set start and end dates so expired offers die on their own.

Permission temp hires before day one

Seasonal staff should arrive to logins that already work. Create a temp role with exactly what the job needs — ring sales, accept returns up to a limit, no refunds over threshold, no settings access — and clone it per hire. Pair each temp with a named buddy for their first two shifts. Review the temp role weekly; permissions creep fastest when everyone is busy.

Stock hardware spares and test failover

Order one spare receipt roll more than you think you need, plus a backup card reader and a charged spare terminal if you have one. Test your offline mode deliberately: kill the wifi for ten minutes during a quiet hour and confirm sales queue and sync cleanly. Label every cable and charger — in a rush, an unlabeled drawer of cords is the same as having none.

Plan the line, not just the register

Throughput is won before the customer reaches the till. Decide where the line forms, where gift-card and pickup orders split off, and where bagging happens so the cashier never waits. If you offer buy-online-pickup-in-store, give pickup its own station and its own notification sound. Walk the path yourself at peak-hour pace; anywhere you stall, customers will stall longer.

Close calmly after the storm

After each peak day, reconcile before you leave: run the close, count the drawer, and spot-check the day's voids and discounts while they are fresh. Log what broke — short rolls, a dead scanner battery, a promo that confused cashiers — and fix one thing before the next rush. The holiday season is a loop, not a single day; every fix compounds.
