End-of-Day Close: Reconcile Every Dollar Before You Lock Up
A practical guide to closing the drawer, reconciling card batches, and starting tomorrow clean on NoPOS — no mystery shortages, no morning surprises.
The NoPOS developer relations team writes practical guides for building on the NoPOS REST API — from first smoke test to production POS.
A clean close turns yesterday's sales into tomorrow's opening bank. The shops that never argue about shortages all do the same thing: count on a schedule, reconcile every tender type separately, and lock the day before anyone goes home.
Count cash while the day is still fresh
- Count the drawer before the rush forgets it, not after everyone is tired and rounding in their heads.
- Record the counted total against the expected total per tender so overages and shortages show up by payment type, not as one mystery number.
- Keep the opening bank fixed and separate so tomorrow starts from the same float and today's variance stays visible.
Reconcile cards and batches the same night
- Settle the card batch before close so authorized payments become captured funds and nothing sits uncaptured overnight.
- Match the batch total to the register's card-tender total and chase any gap the same night while receipts and staff memories are fresh.
- Confirm gift card and store-credit redemptions posted to the right liabilities so tomorrow's balances start correct.
Lock the day and hand off cleanly
- Run the end-of-day sales summary and confirm cash, card, gift, and comp totals each tie to their own expected figures.
- Attach notes to every variance — a voided check, a mis-keyed tender, a comped dessert — so the morning manager reads facts instead of guessing.
- Close and lock the business day in the register so late edits land on tomorrow, keeping every day's numbers honest.
