Bar, Taproom & Nightclub POS: Tabs That Close Themselves
Kill walkout tabs with card pre-auths, split rounds in seconds, enforce last-call cutoffs, and reconcile a loud chaotic night to the penny.
The NoPOS developer relations team writes practical guides for building on the NoPOS REST API — from first smoke test to production POS.
Last call should not mean lost tabs. A bar register that opens tabs on a name and a smile is funding walkouts — one skipped $80 round wipes out the margin on the next twenty drinks. Pre-authorize every card at tab open, keep the round splitting to one tap when the group argues over the bill, enforce the age check before the pour instead of after, and close a chaotic Saturday so the drawer, the card batch, and the pour counts all agree.
Open tabs on plastic, not promises
A tab opened on "Mike, blue shirt" walks out the door the moment Mike's ride arrives. Swipe or tap the card at tab open with a pre-authorization hold — enough to cover a typical round plus a buffer — and print or text the running total so the guest watches it grow instead of being surprised at midnight. Name the tab after the cardholder automatically so the bartender finds it in one search when the bar is three deep. Walkouts drop to near zero the week every open tab has a card behind it.
Split the round without killing the rush
Four friends, eleven drinks, two want to split evenly and one "just had a soda." Rebuilding that bill line by line while the rail fills up is how bartenders start comping drinks to make the line move. Split by seat from the start — every order lands on the guest who ordered it — so splitting the check is one tap per seat, not reconstructive surgery. Support even splits, per-item moves between tabs, and partial payments against a tab without closing it. The round gets faster, not slower, when the register already knows who drank what.
Pour control that survives the noise
Free pours, heavy hands, and "one for me" add up to thousands a month in a high-volume bar. Ring every pour through a recipe with a measured quantity, comp and shift-drink buttons that require a reason code, and a void flow that needs a manager tap — not a silent delete. Reconcile liquor pour counts against sales at close: bottles depleted versus shots rung should match within a tight tolerance, and the outliers get reviewed while the night is still fresh. Shrinkage stops being a mystery when every ounce leaves through the register first.
Age checks and last call without the argument
Serving a minor or pouring past local cutoff hours is a license risk, not a customer-service debate. Prompt for ID verification on age-restricted items with a scan-or-manual-entry log, and lock out flagged products automatically once the local cutoff hits — no override without a manager. Put the last-call warning on the customer display and the bartender screen at the same time so nobody claims they didn't hear it. Compliance holds up on a loud Saturday when the register enforces the rule the same way every time.
Close a loud night to the penny
A nightclub close with three bartenders, two registers, and a line at the door should still reconcile in minutes. Batch every pre-auth into its final capture automatically at close — no hunting for tabs left in "open" status — and surface the exceptions: declined captures, tabs over the pre-auth amount, and comps above threshold. Count each drawer against its own sales, review comps and voids per bartender, and export the card batch total to match the processor deposit next morning. When the tab, the pour, the capture, and the count all come from the same system, the only thing left to argue about is the playlist.
